Better
Bass Fishing: Secrets from the Headwaters
from respected angler and Bassmaster's senior writer
Robert Montgomeryreveals the tactics and truths behind
the fishery. Montgomery makes the case for why paying
attention to the weather can help you bring in the big
one; how you're more likely to reel in largemouths under
a full moon than smallmouths; why Murphy's Law applies
even on the water (never carry just one of any bait);
and how practice and preparation off the water make
perfect later on. He presents hundreds of tried and true
tips and secrets that he's gathered from friends,
pro-fishermen, and from his own time on the water,
making it possible for you to fish like a pro-even if
you aren't!
Better Bass Fishing also covers everything from bass
biology and natural behavior to tackle and equipment,
techniques, safety and conservation and management. And
with special sections on top bass waters
in California, Texas,
Florida, El Salto, Guerrero, Dale Hollow, Door County,
the Potomac and beyond, you're sure to find something
within easy striking distance.
Robert U. Montgomery is a longtime
senior writer for ESPN/BASS Publications.
His work has been published in major fishing and sport
publications and his articles appear regularly in both
Bassmaster magazine and the BASS Times. He has also
written special reports for the American Fisheries
Society and the Clean Water Network. When on assignment,
Montgomery regularly fishes with the world's best bass
anglers on some of the world's best waters.

As Kim Bain-Moore was fishing on the Red River in
Shreveport, Louisiana and making history as the first
female angler ever to fish in the Bassmaster Classic,
there were other young ladies sitting in a classroom at
the nearby Cross Lake Fish Hatchery listening to Angie
Michaels, founder and CEO of FishHer - Gear for Women,
teaching them the basics of fishing.
Approximately 25 members of the Pines To Gulf Girl Scout
Council were present to take the 2 hour course
which included one hour of classroom instruction
followed by one hour of "hands on" fishing in one of the
hatchery's ponds.
Go Fish Girls was created by Michaels to target Girl
Scout troops across the nation and give each member the
opportunity to learn how to fish and provide them with
the tackle needed to get started. Launched in Michael's
home state of Nebraska in 2008, the program is scheduled
to include 5 other states this year and eventually
become nation-wide.
Volunteers from the Recreational Boating and
Fishing Foundation, the Louisiana Coastal Conservation
Association, the Louisiana Fisheries Department and
Recycled Fish were on hand to assist the "future
anglers" as they received instruction. Also present were
"The FishHer Sisters" Denese Freeman and Linda Berry.
Freeman and Berry are anglers on the Women's Bassmaster

Kayla Wright and I had 8 ladies in
our Saturday class and 5 ladies in our Sunday class
October 3-5 at Camp Waluhili, just 45 minutes east of
Tulsa, Oklahoma on the shores of Ft. Gibson Lake.
Classes were from 8 a.m. until 12 noon each day.
Everyone had fun learning new skills and catching lots
of fish. They caught perch/brim, small catfish and bass.
We used worms, frozen corn, live minnows and plastic
baits. Each lady wanted to learn different things about
fishing from tying knots, taking the fish off the hook,
how to put bait on their hook, where to fish and how to
cast. They each got a boat ride and 20 minutes of
fishing from the boat in a nice cove protected from the
wind.
I presented each attendee with a
FishHer visor and talked about the FishHer website where
they could go online to order fishing gear designed
specifically for the female angler. When it was time to
end the class each day, no one wanted to quit fishing.
Once again, time flies when you are having fun!

My
husband Richard and I usually go to Lake Lawtonka when
we fish, but for Labor Day weekend we wanted a more
relaxing venue so we went to Lake Elmer Thomas.
The entire
lake is a “no wake” lake – only idle speed - so the only
people on the lake are either fishing, kayaking or
paddleboating. All the loud people with the large boats
go to Lawtonka.
The lake
is not very far from our home in Lawton, so we
came off the water by noon each day and went home during
the hot part of the day, took our showers, took a nap
and then went back out about 6:00 each evening. I
have not fished Lake Elmer Thomas much because of the
weeds that are everywhere – I have never had much luck
due to the fact that I really didn’t know how to fish it
– guess I can’t say that anymore. The water is so clear
you can see at least 10 feet in depth. Having my new
Skeeter boat to fish out of instead of my old 2 person
Bass Buddy rig really makes a difference.
On
Sunday evening around 10:30 we were both getting tired.
I wanted to fish one last
stretch of bank before I took Richard to the dock to get
the trailer. I made one last cast with my green pumpkin
fluke. I instantly felt something on my line and I froze
– then my line started to move and I set the hook.
When I did – it didn’t budge. I was fishing shallow and
I had to use the
trolling motor to keep it from pulling me close
to the bank.
Richard was
resting in the passenger seat with his feet up on the
front deck and his hands behind his head waiting to call
it a night when all of a sudden I said “GET THE NET”! I
have a somewhat small net and he couldn’t get the net
under the fish to get it in the boat. As I kept tension
on the line, I finally had to convince him to “lip” it.
He had never seen such a large fish and was not ready
for it to fight with so much strength and he dropped it
twice. It was pretty exciting there for a few moments –
a great ending to a long day of fishing. It weighed 6
1/2 lbs and is my biggest catch to date.

American Girl Goes Hunting
(submitted by Sammie Jo Denyes)
The 2008 season is approaching fast on
the Women's Bassmaster Tour so before I pick my fishing gear
back up I had to take full use of my hunting gear before
deer season closed. I have been on the stand 5 times this

to say it has been a good season....However yesterday
evening I took claim to this 9 point 180 pound beauty. I am
looking forward to the close of one season and onto the next
one which is fishing.. The American Girl Army is in full

Look Who's Turning Pro in
2008

Bridget Allen of Philadelphia,
Pennsylvania will make her pro debut in April at the first
WBT event of the year on Lake Lewisville, Texas. Rumor has
it that several co-anglers are making the move to the front
of the boat, including Carolina Linda of Madison, North
Carolina.
"E" Makes Parade Debut"

Erva "E" Bass, ebassfish.com's very own mascot,
was a crowd favorite in the Christmas parade held
Saturday, December 15th in Carolina Linda's hometown of
Madison, NC. This was the second year that Linda has
taken advantage of her hometown's parade to advertise
for her sponsors and thank the community for their
support. She is known on the WBT tour as "Carolina
Linda" but most folks in her hometown call her "The
Fishing Lady".
One of Linda's sponsor's products
came in very handy this year as the weather was a little
un-cooperative with a mixture of cold drizzling rain and
light winds. The BassRoom was used to shelter some of
the kids and adults riding on the boat. At one point
during the parade, there were 4 adults and 3 children
inside the BassRoom. Linda is always finding innovative
ways to use the BassRoom, that is specifically designed
for anglers to use when they don't want to waste
valuable time on the water searching for a restroom. The
BassRoom comes in a compact carry bag and sets up and
folds down easily and quickly. Linda also likes to keep
one in her truck for roadside emergencies when
traveling. For more information about this product visit

opportunity to promote Anglers' Legacy at the 2-day
event. She had 29 women take the Anglers' Legacy Pledge.
She is shown here receiving a pledge card from Carrie

Retrotec is ready to reach the top of the market and we

Charlotte Frazier’s
father, Jim Lawson, died
Wed., Aug. 8th in
Dallas. Burial was Aug.11th
at Arlington Cemetery in
Arlington, Texas, with a
memorial service the
following day in Dallas. He
was a very well known in
Dallas social circuits
having been a sports writer
for the Dallas Times Herald.
Kathy
Magers
attended the memorial
service and found
Charlotte’s family is a
large, very loving one and
all people of faith.
Despite the tears and
sorrow, they were
understandably willing to
turn him over to God. She
was very moved by hearing
all they had to say about
him through laughter and
tears. Again, as in most of
our WBT families, the one
common thread that bound
them was fishing. He
connected with all ages
through a fishing line and
was very proud of
Charlotte’s participation in
the Women’s Bassmaster Tour.
Charlotte proudly pointed
out to visitors his fishing
pictures on display. It’s
easy to see where she
inherited her love of
fishing and passion for
life. Anyone wanting to
express condolences can

While in
Kentucky at WBT Tour Stop # 4,
pro-angler
Robin Babb
of Livingston, Texas taped an
interview with Billy Raymond and it
is currently up on
www.bassfeed.com.
She speaks about the positive impact
the WBT is having and the fans who
are becoming very interested in the
WBT anglers. She also speaks about
sponsorship/marketing opportunities
and the future possibilities of
women being able to have
professional bass fishing as a total
career.
Robin
also did a live radio broadcast with
Andy Afflick on
The

The fun
and unique thing about this
particular interview was that it was
happening while she was
actually going through takeoff for
the final day of the tournament
According to Robin, there was a lot
of positive public interaction both
on the water and off...the WBT is
absolutely a good place to be right
now!
The
BassFeed Podcast is about two
things:
The show is
hosted by Billy Raymond, an
avid angler, a professional journalist, and
an amateur podcaster.
Each week,
Billy will interview professional anglers
from all major tours, guides from some of
the greatest bass fishing lakes in the
country, industry insiders who can share
insight about the latest products and trends
influencing the way we all fish for bass.
In other words, he'll
be talking about fishing tackle, techniques,
and tournaments with the people who have the
most to say on the subject. That will
inlcude top-level professionals from the
Bassmaster Elite Series, FLW Tour,
and
Women's Bassmaster
Tour,
along with sponsors, writers, and other
pundits of the sport.
Past podcasts have
included WBT

travel together, stay together and share expenses.
We also share fishing knowledge. “It works out real
well when you have somebody working with you. You
cover so much more water that way."

Kathy Riley,
new pro-angler from Terry, Mississippi has dreamed for
years to be able to travel and fish full-time. Her wish
was granted this January 6th as she retired from 24
years as an accountant in a leading medical clinic. With
5 surgeries in the past 5 years behind her, she is ready
to start living her dream. Kathy fished the inaugural
year of the WBT as a co-angler and finished the season
in 28th place overall. She is thankful for all the
friends she has made the past year, but credits her
husband and son for giving her strength and
encouragement to "go for it". Kathy will be in a
sponsored boat this year. It is a Nitro 911 CDC, a
center console boat that she will be driving from the
left side. When Kathy is not bass fishing, she loves to
saltwater fish in South Louisiana for Red Fish, Speckle
Trout and Flounder. One of her other activities includes
being a basic fishing instructor for "Becoming An
Outdoors Woman" for the Mississippi Museum for Natural
Science and the Department of Wildlike, Fisheries and
Parks for the past 7 years. Kathy is sponsored by Nitro
Boats, Shimano rods and reels, White Night Rear Lighting
Systems, and Thunder Bullets Precision Fishing Products.
Some other co-anglers planning to
go pro this year are
Robin McFarlane from
San Antonio, Texas and
Laura Helfin of Topeka,
Kansas. Both anglers will be running new Nitros.
Mary Croft
of Bedford, Virginia will be fishing as a pro. Mary
finished in 2nd place overall in the co-angler division
in 2006 and will be fishing in the WBT Championship
tournament on Lake Mitchell near Birmingham, Alabama in
February. Jo Dee Bucki
of Birmingham, Alabama also turned pro this year. You

grandson Austin were invited to play at the convention.
Donna also plays and sings at some of the events that
her family attends around the country.
Diana Clark,
pro-angler from Bumpus Mills, Tennessee and first ever
WBT Toyoto Angler of the Year, tells BASS senior writer
Robert Montgomery that "focus" was the biggest factor
that helped her during the 5 events during the 2006 WBT
inaugural season. Montgomery's article about Diana is on
page 30 of the special Bassmaster Pro Guide 2007 issue
in your mailbox and on newsstands now. The magazine also
mentions anglers Tammy Richardson and Vojai Reed on page 96
under BASS Trivia.
Christiana Bradley,

Tanya Kreuzer,
a competitor on the Mercury Marine Women’s
Bassmaster Tour presented by Triton Boats, recently
helped with a toy drive that benefited about 230
homeless children at the Thomas J. Pappas School in
her home state of Arizona.
“We took three boats to the school and let all the
children look at the boats,” she said. “I let all of
them sit in my truck and my boat. It was a bit crazy
at times as the children were so excited. Almost
none of them had ever been in a boat, let alone sit
in the driver’s seat.”

Karen Elkins Roberts,
pro-angler from Ashland, Alabama, shared Christmas Eve
with 1600 members of her community at a Jesus Banquet
organized by the Word Alive International Outreach
Ministry. Jesus was the reason as his birthday was
honored with a holiday meal and presents for special
guests in attendance. Karen feels she was the one who
was blessed as she photographed many of the families in
attendance who had never had their picture taken before.
She said God worked many miracles to make the banquet a
success for all who participated.

Kathy Magers,
pro-angler from Waxahachie, Texas, will be fishing her
first tournament in 5 years at Tour Stop # 1 of the
Women's Bassmaster Tour on Lake Amistad in Del Rio,
Texas in February 2007. Kathy will no longer be a
consultant with B.A.S.S. now that the WBT is up and
running. She has worked tirelessly in recent years to
see that women anglers have the opportunity to compete
on the same level as the men. She is looking forward to
competing again and even though she won't be fishing the
complete tour, she is very excited about being back on
the water whenever possible.
Carolina Linda Berry,
co-angler from Madison, North
Carolina participated in her hometown's annual
Christmas parade Saturday, December 16th. The theme for
her "boat float" was Take A Kid Fishing. Linda had 6
kids scheduled to ride on her boat in the parade, but 5
of them were sick with the flu. Many floats in the
parade were experiencing the same problem as she found
out when she made a last minute effort to find other
kids. She was thrilled however to have her three and one
half year old grandson, Roberto along to throw out candy
and wave at the crowd.

Robin Babb,
pro-angler from Livingston, Texas,
will be on Alex Langer's "Outdoors This Week" radio show
this Sunday, December 17th, at 8:00 a.m. EST. The
interview can be heard at
www.nationalradionetwork.com
. Robin says that she never knows what the radio
interviews will be about specifically, but she knows it
will definitely have something to do with bass fishing.
Robin is a WBT Classic contender. She finished the WBT
inaugural year in 10th place overall. Not bad for her
rookie year as a pro!
Denese Freeman,
co-angler from Lawton, Oklahoma never knows where her
photo might show up. She was browsing through the
January 2007 issue of Bassmaster magazine and noticed a
small photo in the bottom right corner of page 55. In it
was Denese and her daughter Lindsey with their backs to
the photographer while listening to a live interview
with Ray Scott in Fort Worth, Texas earlier this year.
Denese was also featured on the cover of the WBT
brochure for 2006 along with pro angler Jan Hudson of
Harrison, Arkansas. The brochures were handed out at the
2006 Classic in Kissimmee, Florida. Denese had several
of the brochures, but did not notice she was on the
cover until she had returned to her sister’s home in
North Carolina a few days later. They were going through
their “goodie bags” when she made the discovery.
Needless to say, she was delighted and honored to be on
the very first WBT brochure to be printed.
Ebassfish wonders who will be featured on the 2007 WBT
brochures. Watch your back! You never know when the
ESPN camera will be snapping a photo of you!
Lesa Brown and Tammy Ply,
co-anglers from Harrison,
Arkansas are
Lesa
Tammy already in the Christmas spirit.
They participated in their hometown Christmas parade
recently. The anglers
decorated their truck and boat and used a portable
generator to burn the Christmas lights. They promoted
the Lake Dardanelle Lady Bass Anglers and Table Rock
Lady Anglers, two clubs they are
members of, and Tammy's up-coming WBT Classic appearance
in Birmingham, Alabama in February. This is the 4th year
they have entered a float in the Harrison parade. Last
year they won 1st Place in the Spectacular Sparkle
Division.

Sammie Jo Denyes,
pro-angler from Baker, Florida was featured in an area
newspaper after displaying her new boat wrap "American
Pride" in a Veteran's Day parade in Crestview, Florida.
The Commander of the "Order of the Purple Heart" read
the article and called Sammie Jo. He invited her to
attend a Memorial Dedication for Purple Heart recipients
in Milton, Florida. She was also invited to be a guest
speaker at future Memorial Dedications for Purple Heart
Recipients.
Family members
of Purple Heart recipients can join the Order of the
Purple Heart Chapter in their state. Sammie Jo's dad,
Samuel "Buddy" Whitstine is a Purple Heart recipient.

Christie
Thomas, pro-angler from
Limpopo, South Africa has enjoyed the past week fishing
with friends from South Africa. They are here in the
States preparing for the Federation Nation Championship
in January. Christie has been home-based in Reform,
Alabama while awaiting her visa to be settled. Most of
her time since the final tournament of the 2006 WBT tour
on Bull Shoals in Theodosia, Missouri has been spent on
preparing her resume and sending out proposals to
prospective sponsors. In addition to the Women's
Bassmaster Tour, she also plans to fish 6 of the Elite
Series tournaments as a co-angler in 2007.
When reflecting on her 13th place points finish this
year in the WBT, Christie said she was extremely
disappointed to have missed it so closely, but also very
thankful to have had such a successful rookie season
considering it was her first year fishing competitively
in the U.S. on totally foreign lakes, adjusting to
opposite seasons and learning about strange fish such as
meanmouth and hybrids. With all lessons learned, she
looks forward to 2007 with a bit more wisdom and
experience.
Christie heads
back to South Africa on December 5th to spend the
holidays with her family. She will return to the U.S. in
early January to prepare for WBT Tour Stop # 1 on Lake
Amistead in Del Rio, Texas. She will also attend the
Bassmaster Classic in Birmingham, Alabama in February.
She stated that the WBT has really been a wonderful
experience for her and knowing there are so many
like-minded women out there who also share her passion
for fishing just helps to strengthen her resolve.
Tami
Kashiwabara,
pro-angler from Nagano, Japan is looking forward to
returning to the United States in early January to
prepare for the 2007 WBT Tour. She is currently back
home in Nagano awaiting the arrival of Joan Craig,
pro-angler from London, Arkansas who was invited by Tami
and her boyfriend Shenya to visit them in Japan. Joan
has been a mentor and interpreter for both Tami and
Shenya since she started fishing in the United States
with the WBFA two years ago. William and Carol Cook,
former WBFA owners have also been like Tami's adopted
family when she is here in the States. Tami finished the
2006 WBT Tour year in a respectable 42nd place out of
122 Pro-Anglers. It was her first year as a Pro.
